Social Media is online tools that allow the generation or sharing/exchange/interaction of information, views, ideas, career goals, and various forms of social expression through virtual communities and online networks. Social media includes a wide range of communication methods such as blogs, micro-blogging, RSS feeds, blogs, pod casting, and message boards. Social media provides a forum for people to get to know each other, create and share personal relationships, and develop professional relationships. It also helps people to make money. One great example of a social media site is Twitter which was created by Twitter, a company based in New York, USA.
There are several types of social media: Blogs are relatively new and can be described as posts that are shared with others; micro-blogging is a form of blogging but often incorporates a number of features such as Twitter. RSS feeds are an efficient and reliable way of syndicating and maintaining content across a large number of networks including Twitter, Facebook, Digg, Flickr, FourSquare, and others. They provide a quick and effective distribution method. Pod casts are short audio conversations that are broadcast on the Internet and can be listened to or downloaded on a computer. Message boards are online discussion forums where people can ask questions, make comments, or connect to others in a similar position.
Another example of a tool that allows people to share information is YouTube. It has quickly become one of the most popular websites in use today. With millions of users accessing videos everyday it is an excellent way for people to express themselves, attract visitors, generate revenue, and interact with other people. Many businesses and individuals have turned to YouTube as a marketing tool because of its viral nature, ability to drive huge amounts of traffic to websites, and ease of use. This sharing of ideas and content creates a positive feedback loop that encourages more people to participate in the conversation and participate in the content available on any particular social network or site.
